Puppy Training Biting – Using Litter Techniques to Stop Biting

When one first gets a puppy it seems that everything the puppy does is cute. They are little bundles of energy running around the room.

They run, they jump, they bark, they play and they nip at you.  It all is so cute, at least for now it is.  Wait until the puppy is grown into a 50 pound dog and is running around, jumping, barking, playing and biting you, then see if you still think it is cute.

Most people agree that no one wants to be bitten by a 50 pound dog, but the time to prevent that is when the dog is still a puppy, and you can add to your puppy training, biting prevention.

Dogs are born in litters and a good deal of their learning comes from their mother and other litter mates. The problem is that we have a tendency to remove puppies from this environment before they have learned some of the skills they really need to have.  For this reason when we embark on puppy training, biting prevention has to be included.

In the litter the mother dog and other litter members would teach a puppy when it is okay to bite and when it is not.  They also would keep the puppy in check on what is going “too far” and what is okay.  These are not always easy lessons for a puppy to learn, but they learn them and they do so quickly.

As a sort of surrogate family to your puppy it is up to you to include in your puppy training – biting prevention.   Since you can’t be a litter mate, you must act as a surrogate mother.  If you watch mothers with their puppies at the very instant the puppy does something wrong, the mother lets him know it.

Generally with a yelp, a bark or some form of verbal communication.  This is generally followed by a show of disinterest in the prior activity.  It is this technique that we need to emulate in order to deal with puppies who want to nip or bite.

Generally a loud yelp or noise followed by walking away from the puppy is all it takes for the puppy to realize something is wrong.  It may take several times, but puppies are smart and they catch on to what is going on and will learn not to make the same mistake again.  This is one way you can use puppy training for biting prevention.
