Puppy Jumping and Biting – Do It Like the Dogs Do

Most new puppies don’t seem to know how to behave when guests arrive at one’s home. For many it is a time of excitement and owners watch in dismay as their cute puppy jumps and bite at their guests.  This can be annoying and can lead to bigger and more sever issues if it is not taken care of.

While it can be cute now while the puppy is still young and small, but once the puppy grows to adulthood and is a 50 pound dog, no one will think it is cute at all.

One of the easiest ways to stop your puppy from jumping and biting on those coming into your home is to simply not encourage it.  Many times when we come in and our little dogs are running around jumping and nipping at us, we see it has their expression of being happy to see us, so excited that they can’t stand it and we find it heartwarming.  Well in truth, in the dog world it isn’t that at all.  It is very disrespectful.

If you watch dogs when they gather, they don’t pay much attention to the dog running around acting like that at all.  It is the dogs that are calm and collected, that follow the “routine” that are noticed by the other dogs, the ones they chose to play with.

So for us humans, we need to think like a dog.  We need to ignore a puppy jumping and biting for attention.  Turn your back on the puppy and wait until he regains his composure before you even turn around to greet him. This is really what he expects and what keeps him in balance.

At times we just cannot get our dogs to calm down no matter how we ignore them. This can be a very challenging time for the puppy owner, but try to remain calm and take it a step farther by removing the dog from the situation.  Take him into another room, close the door and leave him.  He may whine and carry on but once he is quiet then go and bring him back into the situation and see if he has figured out how to get control of himself, if he hasn’t back he goes.

You may need to repeat these steps several times and on several occasions but rest assured that the puppy is learning so he just is making sure you really mean it.  Eventually he will catch on there will be no puppy jumping and biting in your house.
