Potty Training Your Puppy – Tips for Success

It doesn’t matter what your dog’s breed is. Potty training your puppy is going to be a difficult and trying time for you. But you love your puppy and you only want what’s best for them. So you’re going to have to develop a little bit of patience. There are certain things you need to understand before you begin to train your puppy.

The most important thing to remember is that this is a puppy. It’s not a child. Although they are similar in a lot of ways, puppies don’t understand verbal language. You can’t talk to them and tell them why it’s wrong to go in the house. You have to show them.

Be consistent when training Set up a schedule that you can follow, and stick to it. Don’t break the schedule. It’s important that your puppy have a routine so that he can learn. Take your puppy out frequently.

Wait 10 to 15 minutes after every meal to take him to the bathroom. Take him out every morning, every night just before bed and after his naps during the day. If you hear him being restless in the middle of the night, get up to take him out. This will teach him to go outside, and not in the house.

Don’t paper train your puppy, and then turn around and try to teach him to go outside. You’ll have to train him all over again. Stick to taking him outside to go to the bathroom. If no one is there to watch him, crate your puppy. You don’t want to come home to messes that you have to clean up.

Make sure that your family knows the rules for  training as well. During the training period, only feed your puppy solid food. This will keep his stool solid. It will also make him very thirsty, which means he’ll be drinking plenty of water. This is why it’s important to take him out frequently.

Your puppy is going to have accidents during potty training. It’s natural. He has yet to figure out where the bathroom is. Keep a cleaning product in your home specifically designed to get rid of pet odors. You can get these from any pet store. If you don’t have time for potty training your puppy, you can always buy an older dog that’s already potty trained. This dog can be an example, and teach the pup where to go to the bathroom.
