How to Stop Puppies from Biting – What To Do

There are a few methods available that will teach you how to stop puppies from biting. There are also several tips. Although puppies nipping and biting rarely causes serious harm, never allow your puppy to play with your feet and hands.

This will give them the impression that biting skin is an acceptable action. Never hit or slap your puppy, for two reasons. It does not work, and your puppy may think you are only playing. It could also become afraid of you as a result of repeated physical strikes. This could lead to more complicated problems than nipping and biting.

The first method is to yelp when bitten. Do this even if you are not actually injured. Since puppies are social animals, refusing to play with them can be effective for training them.

When you are nipped at or bitten, yelp like a dog or cry out “ouch”. You may then walk away, returning after a minute or two. If the puppy nips or bites at you again, repeat the process. This will teach the puppy that nipping and biting is bad because it hurts you.

The second method  is to fill an empty can with pennies or rocks. Tape the mouth of the can shut after filling it with coins or rocks. When the puppy bites or nips at you, say something like ‘ouch’ or ‘no bite’, and shake the can.

This helps to enforce the verbal command, since puppies hate the noise of items rattling in cans. Another method is to use a spray bottle. When your puppy bites you, spray him with water. If the spray bottle has a light mist setting, you can spray him in the face. This is not recommended if you only have a jet stream spray bottle.

There are also tips associated with how to stop puppies from biting. While teaching your puppy not to bite, avoid games that will encourage biting such as tug-of-war, as well as games that involve chasing and tackling.

Also avoid dangling treats that will encourage the puppy to jump for them. This encourages snapping at food and may injure the puppy’s growing joints. Teach your puppy to get used to working for things, like sitting down before being fed. If the above methods do not work, consider seeking a dog behaviorist.
